Keep Your Cool

Depending on where you live, you may or may not have a problem keeping cool. Here in the northern hemisphere, it’s summertime — and it’s hot outside! If you live in a warm climate, or you keep your home heated to a warm temperature, you can probably relate to feeling overheated, especially after — or even during — a workout.

When you are exercising, keep some water handy, and take a sip every few minutes. Even a few sips will help keep you hydrated. Drink the water any temperature that you like — I like very cold water! If you get bored with plain water, add some lemon or lime juice, and/or a bit of sugar-free sweetener if desired.

Here are some more tips for keeping your cool:

  • If you feel especially sweaty, daub your forehead, arms, and neck with cool water. Add a few drops of your favorite perfume, if you like. Orange flower water is also a good addition.
  • Try splashing on a little cologne. As it evaporates, you feel cooler. Rubbing alcohol also works well.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes with plenty of room for air to circulate.

Some of us occasionally feel overheated for no apparent reason, especially in the evening. The best ways to deal with this phenomenon are similar, but not always identical, to the ones that are useful during a workout.

If you are having trouble sleeping, put on a fan or use the air conditioner. Take off blankets or clothing as needed. Apply a cool cloth to your forehead. Drink some water.

I hope these ideas help you keep your cool!
